Now there's an example of something that does nothing. And by "nothing", I mean that it does something, just so atrociously poorly that it might as well do nothing and you'd never notice the difference. This takes mana fixing to a whole new low. Cards like Farrelite Priest are bad at it too, but they at least do something else (in this case, bash for 2).
North Star, most of the time, will do nothing. Hey, you're mana screwed? Sure, you can play that spell. But you'll have to pay a whole 4 mana extra to be able to do it. Honestly, if I was that worried about being color screwed, I'd want to rethink my mana base in the first place. Maybe I shouldn't be playing 4 copies of a certain hard-to-cast creature with only 4 sources of black mana in my deck. The fault is the player, not the inability to cast the card.
Besides, what the hell are you trying to cast that's that color intensive? I'd rather run a deck built around a different artifact and bother with a 5-color manabase than deal with the Star. Speaking of Fist of Suns, the Gatherer comments illustrate the best combo in the universe:
- Cast North Star
- Use North Star to cast Fist of Suns
- You now have a Fist of the North Star
- ???
- Win
The best part about this card is that it's illustrated by Kaja Foglio, who I suspect is married to the best artist in Magic, Phil Foglio. The guy has some pretty bizarre and hilarious art that in no way conveys the "FANTASY IS SRS BIZNESS" style that Magic tends to adopt. It's awesome. And out of place. And awesome.
...did I mention awesome?

I don't think they've let Phil on a set since 1998 or so, which is an absolute travesty.

LOOK AT THE PICTURE. Also, an impressive resume.
